In Celtic mythology the Ash was sacred to Gwydion as a tree of enchantment, from whose twigs he made his wands. The spiral arrangement of the buds links the three circles of existence - past, present and future. A Druidic Ash wand was found in Angelsey dating from the first century AD featuring a spiral decoration.![]()
Beech is considered to be a feminine Goddess tree. Related to help free the mind from its limitations and to reconnect to the higher purpose.
Birch is associated with purification, protection, fertility and healing. New beginnings, cleansing and creativity. It is believed to make effective healing or protective magic wands.
Blackthorn, dense and strong, is known as an increaser of secrets and the “rune of the great wheel”. Its thorns make it impenetrable. A wand or staff made from this wood has great power. Twisted Blackthorn is a rare find, and it is treated accordintly.![]()
Chestnut has the ability to deepen the experience of any ritual and aid the acceptance of one’s own instincts.
Elm is said to be a favorite meeting tree. It is a tree of inspiration and a favorite of woodland spirits.
Hawthorn is associated with Faeries. When Oak, Ash and Hawthorn grow close together it is a favorite spot of the Fey people. Solitary Hawthorns growing on hills or near wells were considered to be indications that faeries are near. It is associated with love and fertility.
Hazel relates old wisdom and the gaining of wisdom. It was sacred to the Celts and associated with water — springs and wells. Celtic wandmakers regard Hazel as a good all-purpose wand for inspiration and inner guidance.
Holly represents life as it stays green year round. A masculine tree — it speaks of warrior magic and spiritual strength.
Oak teaches persistence and endurance, strength and protection. Known as the King of the Forest, oak is traditionally associated with strength and courage. Protective and strong, Oak makes wands that can last for generations.![]()
Rowan is believed to be a protective wood. Used for invoking spirits, familiars, spirit guides and elementals. It can also be used to banish undesirable energies.
Willow is feminine, strongly associated with water, poetry the expansion of intuition and inspiration.
Yew is related to our personal pasts, as well as the old wisdom. Symbolically, fresh growth arising out of death, perhaps of our old selves, and old ways of thinking.
Used for contact with ancestors.
